This Little Marker Set Lets Kids Do BIG Creative Experiments

Unlike a lot of other kids’ art supplies, Crayola Ultra-Clean Washable Markers are insanely versatile.

This is partly because Crayola is such a juggernaut in the kids’ art space. The company invests heavily in creating cohesive systems and product lines. As a result, kids can tinker with 2D art, watercolor techniques, sculpture, and more using just a handful of supplies.

One of my favorite ways to encourage creativity at home is by building what I call a “creative pantry”. Like we build pantries in our kitchen, a creative pantry is a thoughtfully curated collection of supplies kids can easily access and experiment with.

In my art classes, I pay close attention to which products and techniques make my students’ eyes light up. Most of their favorites feature Crayola washable markers.

This is a large part of the reason why Crayola’s Bright Colors 10-pack is my go-to for summer creativity.

From sculpting to coloring to watercoloring, there are just so many techniques kids can do with Crayola ultra-clean washable markers. There's a reason why it's one of my favorite art supplies ever.

What Makes Crayola’s Bright Colors So Summery?

It all comes down to this basic equation:

Tropical, cool colors = sweet summer vibes

This marker set features:

  • Ample cool blues (oceans! pools! icy beverages!)

  • Cool tones all around (even the yellows and oranges feel icy)

  • Colors that feel tropical, not autumnal (Think “juicy orange” instead of “fall leaf”)

This lil box of hues gives total tropical, poolside energy.

The colors included in the Bright Colors pack are:*

  • Laser Lemon

  • Orange Circuit

  • Infra Red

  • Hot Pink

  • Hot Magenta

  • Ultra Violet

  • Graphic Green

  • Battery Charged Blue

  • Blue Bolt

  • Electric Lime

If I’m honest, I could probably drop the Infra Red from this palette. I’ve also been nursing a grudge against red for the last few years for various reasons (it’s an artist thing - I’ll grow out of it!). But the rest? Chef’s kiss.

Art Supply Hack: If you happen to have the Crayola Big 40 set, you can pull out the Bright Colors shades and make this palette yourself.

When you read through the list, did you notice how vibrant and electric so many of the color names are?

That’s because the Bright Colors pack is full of hues with pizzazz.

It’s the perfect combo for coloring scenes of beach life, skateboarding through city streets with a cool cola in hand, or manning the lemonade stand.

That’s summer, baby!

It's amazing how many summer projects we can make with just 1 box of 10 kids' markers!

*Sometimes Crayola switches out a few colors in a box. I try to update my content whenever that happens, but one or two colors may vary from year to year.

This Palette Has a Sparkling Guest List

I like to think of a color palette as a well-thought-out guest list. All of the colors bring something fun and special to the party. Dazzling conversations break out, not fist fights.

In short, the colors in a palette bring out the best in each other.

One of my favorite ways to explore a palette is by creating a Palette Mix Matrix. This is a great way to see how all the colors work with one another, both individually and as a whole.

Check out how beautifully Crayola’s Bright Colors mix together. They combine to make lush neutrals and darks you might title “Deep Ocean” or “June Thunder.”

This marker box isn’t just setting up any old party. It’s ready for a summer shindig.

The Most Powerful Palettes Have Fewer Colors

Ok, confession time:

I NEVER buy boxes of standard-sized crayons.

Why?

It’s simple. They have too many colors.

Most crayon boxes are like being in a grocery store trying to pick out toothpaste.

Whitening? Minty breath? Total clean? Ocean Blue? Robin’s Egg Blue? Little Boy Blue?

STOP THE MADNESS.

Seriously. It’s too much. When beginning artists are given 128 colors to choose from, they are not learning. They are being asked to navigate chaos.

Experienced artists know this. When I’m given a box of crayons, I usually pull out 4–8 sticks and use my color knowledge to build darks, neutrals, and focal points.

The best-kept secret of art-making is that often, less is more. This is especially true when learning about color.

This is why I love the handful of small, well-curated palettes Crayola and other art supply companies have put together. They let kids revel in the power of limited palettes even before they have the skills to build those palettes themselves.

Lookit all these yummy hues we get by mixing our Bright Colors markers together! These colors remind me of long days by the lake or the pool.

1 Good Palette = Dozens of Yummy Micro Palettes!

And the Palette Power doesn’t stop there.

Once you have a great palette like Bright Colors, you can pull dozens of micro palettes from the larger collection.

Kids can build their understanding of color by making micro palettes with three, two, or even a single color.

In fact, I created a whole collection of adorable, refreshing summer art projects using micro palettes pulled directly from the Bright Colors box.

Juicy watermelon slices, American flags, glasses of cold lemonade, and bursting summer blackberries can all be vividly created with just a few markers.

Final Thoughts: Big Creativity Can Come from

Small Supplies

One of the most beautiful things about creativity is that it doesn’t require endless materials. In fact, some of the strongest artistic learning happens when kids are given a small collection of thoughtful supplies and a few lessons on fundamental concepts.

That’s why I love Crayola’s Bright Colors set so much. With just 10 washable markers, kids can explore color mixing, create dozens of vibrant micro palettes, and make artwork that feels connected, expressive, and full of personality.

A simple creative pantry can go a very long way.

So this summer, don’t worry about buying every art supply under the sun. Grab a marker box, some paper, and a squirt bottle. You might be amazed by how much creativity can blossom from just a handful of bright colors.

FAQs about Crayola Bright Colors Marker Set

Why are Crayola Bright Colors markers good for summer art projects?

Crayola Bright Colors markers feature crisp tropical hues that feel perfect for summertime creativity. The cool blues, electric greens, vivid pinks, and citrusy yellows create artwork that feels bright, refreshing, and playful.

What are “micro palettes” in art?

"Micro palettes" is the phrase I use to describe tiny color collections made from just 1–3 colors. Using small palettes helps kids better understand color relationships, color mixing, and visual harmony without feeling overwhelmed by too many choices.

Are washable markers good for watercolor techniques?

Yes! Crayola Ultra-Clean Washable Markers work beautifully for watercolor marker techniques. Kids can scribble marker ink onto a tray or plate, add water, and paint with the dissolved color for vibrant watercolor effects.

What age are these marker activities best for?

These summer art projects work well for preschoolers, elementary-aged kids, and even older children who enjoy experimenting with color. Younger kids may need a little extra support with scissors or watercolor techniques.

Limited color palettes help kids focus on color relationships, problem-solving, and creativity instead of simply choosing from endless options. Fewer colors often lead to more cohesive and expressive artwork.

What kinds of summer projects can kids make with the Bright Colors marker pack?

Kids can create watermelon art, lemonade projects, American flags, summer fruit illustrations, swimsuits, beach-themed crafts, and more with just a handful of bright, summery colors.
